Easy Flap Pillow Case Cover

Fall is approaching and I want to add some fall color to my family room.  Throw pillows are a quick way to add color.  I'd like to add seasonal and holiday color without having to use up a lot of storage space for most of the year.  The solution was to make quick removable pillow covers that can be used on the same pillow forms throughout the year.

These easy covers do not require zippers, so they are a super quick project.

Easy Throw Pillow Covers

Supplies:

Fabric (I used 1 yard to  create 2 pillow covers)

Pillow Forms or Throw Pillows

Thread

Sewing Machine

Tape Measure

Scissors or Wheel Blade Cutter and mat

Pins

1.  Measure the circumference of your pillow or pillow form. Make sure that the tape measure is snug.

2.  Straighten the edge of the fabric and remove selvedges.

3.  Leave fabric folded in half and cut the fabric to the measurement of 1/2 the pillow circumference adding an additional 3/4".  The circumference of my pillows is 34.5".             34.5/2=17.25"
                      17.25"+.75"=18"

My fabric piece is cut with an 18 inch length and has a 42" width.

4.  Open up the piece of fabric with the long sides at the top and bottom.  Bring the shorter ends into the middle.  It is time to finish the flap edges.

5.  Fold over approximately 1/2" and finger press to hold in place.

6.  Fold over a second time and pin in place.  Repeat with other short edge.

7.  Sew each folded edge with a 1/4" seam allowance.

8.  Place pillow/pillow form in center of open fabric.  Bring the finished edges to the center, overlapping them and making sure that the sides are straight and that the pillow is snug inside the cover.  The flap hem should be facing the outside of the form.

9.  Pin one side of the fabric where two raw edges meet.

10.  Remove the pillow form and make sure that all raw edges line up.  Pin each edge.

11.  Sew each raw edge using a 1/4" seam allowance.  If desired, you can surge the edge or use a zigzag stitch to keep the fabric from fraying in the laundry.

12.  Lay on flat surface and cut any thread ends.

13.  Turn right side out so the seams are on the inside.  You can use a chop stick to get the corners pointed.  Press the pillow cover with iron.

Front side of pillow.

Back side of pillow.

The pillow covers can be made from most woven fabric.  Recommended fabrics include: canvas, upholstery fabric, quilting cotton fabric, denim, broadcloth, flannel. Remember to prewash fabric to reduce shrinkage.  Stretch fabric is not recommended.
